Tranmere Rovers have today added midfielder Ryan Williams to their squad on a short term deal which runs until January 2019.
No, it’s not the diminutive midfielder we had on the book in the late 1990s of the same name, but a talented player who you may recognise from playing for Morecambe between 2013 and 2015.
Born in Birkenhead and having started his professional career with Chester City, his path to his hometown club has seen him make some fascinating journeys.
The early part of his career saw him play a fair bit of futsal (alongside semi-professional football), for Tranmere Victoria and Liverpool Futsal, going on to play for England aged just 18 in a Four Nations tournament organised by the FA and playing against Turkey.
His football path had seen him play in North Wales, for Colwyn Bay, Llandudno and Rhyl, and impressive displays led to a move into the Football League with Morecambe.
Making his mark with some impressive goals and performances for the Shrimps, he earned a move into the Championship with Brentford. But it was a short-lived experience, making just a solitary League Cup appearance for the club before agreeing to leave before his contract expired.
A brief spell in Scotland with Inverness Caledonian Thistle followed before he jetted across the Atlantic to play in America with Ottawa Fury, winning accolades from their supporters and impressing during a season and a half with the club.
His next club was in Brazil! Paysandu to be precise. I don’t think many Rovers players over the years have ever played in Brazil before! But he only played once for them, before agreeing to leave to come home.
So he’s had quite a journey over his 10 year career to date and hopefully he can add to those experiences while at Prenton Park.
He’s known for being a bit of a set piece specialist, scoring a few great goals from dead ball situations.
The video HERE was taken during his Ottawa Fury days where he demonstrates his technique, and if you search on YouTube, you will find a number of great goals he has scored. Hopefully he can add to those while with Rovers! It’s been a while since we had a set piece specialist as such.
Welcome to the club, Ryan.
