Tranmere’s pre-season programme seemed short when it was announced, but following tonight’s postponement of the friendly with Bury, it will be even shorter.
Rovers seem to have had the shortest pre-season that many can remember, and will end having played only two friendlies at Prenton Park following cancellation of the game against Bury due to heavy rain.
While Mellon’s team have played a small number of games against local teams, including an 11-0 win at Cammel Laird. At home, Tranmere have lost 4-0 to Liverpool and beaten Fleetwood Town 3-1. They also saw a friendly away at Ashton United cancelled earlier this month, although it was reported that Rovers would not have sent a full-strength side for that match.
It’s expected that Tranmere will organise a behind-closed-doors friendly to make up for the Bury postponement and to ensure that the team is prepped and ready for the opening league fixture of the campaign at Torquay United on Saturday.
Meanwhile, trialist Nana Owusu has left the club after failing to do enough to impress. Rovers are expected tie-up a deal to sign experienced defender Jay McEveley within the next 24 hours.
