Tranmere among front-runners to sign Chelsea midfielder

Tranmere are leading the race to sign Chelsea midfielder Jacob Maddox on loan and could have a deal in place within the next 48 hours, according to speculation.

The 20-year-old has been made available for loan by the Stamford Bridge club having enjoyed a successful spell at Cheltenham last season where he played in excess of 40 games.

While he only found the net once for the Robins, his move could add vital strength to a Rovers midfield that was left a little exposed against Rochdale on Saturday. Maddox is an attacking midfielder, comfortable in possession and capable of covering a lot of ground. He’s bright, energetic and happy to run with the ball at his feet.

As far as young players go, he would arrive with an excellent pedigree. He joined Chelsea from Bristol City at the end of his under-15 year and went on to be a vital part of the Chelsea development squad.

He also has some international experience as well having represented England at just about every level up to under-20, his current level. He won the under-19 European Championship with England in 2017 and also helped the Chelsea youth team to a treble-winning season in the same year.

He’s contracted at Chelsea until 2021 and having coped admirably with his first year of senior football in League Two, his parent club are now keen for him to push on at a higher level.

As we understand it, it’s not quite cut and dried. There is interest from at least two other clubs, one of which is at League One level.
