Why Watford’s loss could be Tranmere’s gain

Watford’s recent form in the Premier League has been excellent and had helped them climb out of the top flight relegation zone temporarily.

Nigel Pearson has galvanised The Hornets since taking charge at Vicarage Road, but their 2-1 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa has put them back down into the drop zone.

Does this have any impact on Tranmere? Well, ahead of their FA Cup replay at Prenton Park, their sticky situation in the league could have an impact on the strength of the side Pearson names for the rearranged encounter at Prenton Park on Thursday night.

The Premier League outfit made plenty of changes as it was for the original tie back on January 4, but a busy schedule of two games in three days on top of being back in the relegation zone could certainly affect team selection, with Premier League survival almost certainly the club’s priority.

They had led at Villa Park this evening, but the concession of two goals in the second half, the match winner with the final kick of the match, will be a kick in the teeth for Pearson and his troops.

With the majority of their focus on the league, the Watford boss will almost certainly rest all of his key players at Tranmere (as if he didn’t plan to already) with important points to play for in the coming weeks.

It’s an opportunity for Tranmere to cause another cup upset, and the potential of a home tie against Manchester United is an irresistible one, both in terms of prestige for the club as well as the small matter of finances.

It’ll be a big night at Prenton Park, so if you haven’t already, make sure you’ve got your ticket – www.trfctickets.co.uk.
