BT Sport pundit and former Brighton & Hove Albion defender Adam Virgo has backed Tranmere for the National League title, in comments made before the Dagenham and Aldershot game on Saturday.
Virgo has been firmly in the pro-Tranmere camp all season, even during the autumn when Rovers couldn’t score goals, let alone win matches.
Following a run of form that has seen Micky Mellon’s men climb back in to title contention, Virgo commented following Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Leyton Orient that he still sees Tranmere as “the ones to beat” in the run-in.
Rovers briefly topped the division at half-time of their game on Saturday, but by the time the evening’s game between Dagenham and Aldershot (0-2) had finished, they were back down to fourth spot, four points off top and having played a game more than the top two.
This coming weekend will be a fascinating one in the division, with many of the teams in the top eight playing each other.
As for Virgo’s belief that Rovers are still the team our rivals should be scurrying to finish ahead of, opposition manager Justin Edinburgh had also sung Rovers’ praises ahead of the game with his Leyton Orient side on Saturday. Edinburgh had commented on how he sees Tranmere as one of the best teams in the league.
It’s up to Rovers to now prove the likes of Virgo and Edinburgh correct in their beliefs, starting with Saturday’s tricky game at home to Bromley.
