Colchester United boss McGreal favourite for Tranmere post

By

Sky Bet have former Tranmere man John McGreal as the even money favourite to replace Micky Mellon as Rovers boss.

While it’s unlikely too much can be read in to the market for this, the EFL’s title sponsor has McGreal priced at 1/1 to be named as next Tranmere manager. The former defender did of course play more than 200 games for Rovers at the start of his career prior to joining Ipswich Town.

As a manager, McGreal led Colchester to the League Two play-offs this term before being beaten in the semi-final by Exeter City. Some rumours have circulated in the last few days that McGreal has already parted company with the Essex-based club although nothing concrete or official seems to back that up.

Mellon’s assistant at Rovers, Michael Jackson, is currently second favourite for the job at 2/1 while Nigel Adkins – who seems to be the man most fans seem to want to get the job – is currently priced at 6/1 alongside Robbie Fowler (sigh).

There is the usual mix of random names plucked from nowhere on the list, including Oldham’s Dino Maamria at 14/1 and then a whole host of names at 20/1, including David Unsworth, Nigel Clough, Sol Campbell, Paul Hurst and current Harrogate manager Simon Weaver.

Meanwhile, Tranmere Chairman Mark Palios is expected to make a statement at some point today in regard to Mellon’s departure.

Our hunch is that Jackson, if not going to Dunfermline, will be a leading candidate. But let’s wait and see.
