Liverpool keeper George completes loan move

Tranmere have completed the signing of young Liverpool goalkeeper Shamal George on loan following a successful trial.

As we have previously reported, George played 45 minutes of Tranmere’s friendly against Fleetwood Town on Saturday ahead of his proposed loan move with Scott Davies likely to miss the start of the season due to injury.

George, from the Wirral, has signed a new contract at Anfield ahead of his move across the Mersey and will now fight it out with Luke Pilling for a place in the starting eleven heading in to the new season. He spent a similar spell at Carlisle during the previous campaign.

Speaking to tranmererovers.co.uk, Tranmere boss Micky Mellon said of the signing:

“We are delighted to bring Shamal into the group on loan.”

“From the 45 minutes that he played on Saturday you could see his ability as a goalkeeper and the confidence that he has.”

“We are looking forward to seeing more of what he has to offer and helping him grow as player here at Tranmere”.

As for Scott Davies, it’s a groin injury that he is struggling with and it’s a waiting game to see how long the Rovers number one will be side-lined. He was expected to undergo a scan this week to discover the extent of the injury.

With that in mind, it’s not surprising that Shamal’s loan at Prenton Park is until January as Micky Mellon ensures there is enough cover in the squad.

His signing is the latest illustration of what appears to be increasingly strong links between Rovers and Liverpool. Signage at Tranmere’s training ground – on display at Sunday’s open day – also confirmed what we hinted at in this article in that Liverpool Ladies will also be calling Wirral their home this coming season.
