Who could Tranmere sign today? Rumoured targets from Hartlepool United to Swindon Town

By

It’s transfer deadline day, and while it promises to be a busy one and got started early enough, it’s all gone a little quiet.

Micky Mellon is on the lookout for new players to bolster a struggling team. Rovers have been found short on quality in key areas and strengthening is key if Tranmere are to successfully fight against relegation.

So, James Vaughan and Morgan Feeney have already arrived from Bradford City and Everton respectively, but who else has been linked with Tranmere?

Here’s a selection:

Gime Toure, Hartlepool United – This was a new name to most of us when the player’s own agent/representatives came out on Twitter to link him with Rovers and SEVEN other clubs earlier this week. Pools boss Dave Challinor reacted angrily and is expecting the player to stay at Victoria Park. Carlisle United have had a bid rejected for the player.

Who is he? Well, he’s a 6ft 2ins Frenchman who had a trial at WBA in 2014 but eventually came to England permanently in 2017 joining Macclesfield. He went to Hartlepool from Sutton United last summer

Andy Cook, Mansfield Town – Social media fueled rumours of Cookie returning to Birkenhead this month, and it’s always looked highly unlikely. He’s come off the bench to score twice in the last week or so for Mansfield and is considered an important player as they try to improve a poor season. Added to the fact that the Stags paid £150,000 for the player in the summer, this seems highly unlikely.

Danny Mayor, Plymouth Argyle – Another one that almost certainly won’t happen. The links to Mayor are probably more through wishful thinking, and speculation was fuelled for a few hours on Tuesday night after he was omitted from Plymouth’s squad. However, boss Ryan Lowe confirmed this was down to injury and that the player was going nowhere.

Leon Clarke, Sheffield United – Veteran Blades front man Clarke has found first team opportunities hard to come by at Sheffield United this season, understandibly so. He did in the Championship as well and went to Wigan on loan at this point last season. There’s a chance he will head out again today, although former club Coventry City are favourites to sign him. Wages would be a massive stumbling block for any Tranmere move you’d suspect, but in the absence of anything more concrete, and by virtue of him being a big target man striker in his 30s, we will add him to the list.

Kaiyne Woolery, Swindon Town – One that has emerged in the last few hours is a very tenuous link with Swindon winger/striker Kaiyne Woolery. The ex-Wigan man is in-demand, Blackpool apparently leading the race. However, while he cost Swindon £350,000 in 2017, he is out of contract this summer and has been enjoying a great season. Will someone grab a bargain?
