Tranmere sign highly-rated winger on loan

Tranmere have bolstered their attacking options with the signing of winger Logan Chalmers on loan from Dundee United.

The 22-year-old joins Rovers until the end-of-the-season and, subject to international clearance, is expected to go into the squad for Saturday’s game away to Doncaster Rovers.

Chalmers has spent the first half of the season out on loan at Ayr United but was recalled a few days ago to allow him to move to Prenton Park. He was also linked with Forest Green Rovers, but in joining Tranmere, Chalmers links up again with the man who arguably brought out the best in him in his short career so far.

Rovers boss Micky Mellon had Chalmers at Dundee United during the 2020/21 season and the youngster played what was probably the best football of his career to date for the Scottish Premier League side.

Speaking to the official Tranmere website about his latest recruit, Mellon said: “We’re really pleased to bring Logan in. He’s a really talented lad who plays in the wide areas which we have been crying out for to help the squad and give us options out wide.

“I’d like to thank Dundee United for allowing Logan to join us and we’re really excited to start working with him.”

Chalmers most commonly operates on the left wing and will certainly add pace and an attacking threat to a team that has lacked cutting edge in the final third all season. His arrival may well lead to further speculation about the future of Josh Hawkes, with the ex-Sunderland man recently linked with several League One clubs.

However, in isolation Chalmers’ arrival is a welcome one. Rovers are in real need of some new attacking players and this feels like a step in the right direction. Hopefully, a striker or two will follow in the coming days.
