Can Tranmere Topple Table Toppers Lincoln?

By

It’s another big game for Tranmere Rovers on Easter Monday as they travel to table toppers Lincoln City.

Micky Mellon’s men will be looking for three points to keep automatic promotion ambitions alive while the hosts could well clinch the league title on their home turf, already with promotion into League One next season secured.

Defeat at Carlisle United on Good Friday denied Danny Cowley’s side the chance to have sealed the championship, perhaps having taken the foot off the gas slightly after having automatic promotion already in the bag.

But they’ll be keen to wrap up the championship in front of their home fans, that’s the added motivation for Lincoln, so we’re sure to be in for a very tough game at Sincil Bank.

Tranmere, themselves, were dealt a blow in their push for promotion on Good Friday. A 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Forest Green Rovers has somewhat dented hopes of automatic promotion, but there is still plenty to play for with a play-off position still not certain for Micky Mellon’s side.

So what’s the size of the task facing Rovers on Monday?

Well, Lincoln are top of the league, so tests don’t come too much harder! They’ve only lost once at home in the league so far this season, a 1-0 defeat against Crawley Town way back in September, although nine of their home fixtures have resulted in draws.

But Tranmere can take confidence from being one of only five teams to have beaten The Red Imps in League Two this season, a 1-0 win at Prenton Park in October with James Norwood netting the only goal of the game.

So, we’ve proved we can do it once, let’s see if we can do what no other club has done against Lincoln City this season and do the double over them. It would be quite an achievement in itself.

Three points would be massive in a number of ways. The confidence you can take from beating the ‘champions elect’ and doing the double over them would be huge. And, depending on other results, it could put Rovers closer to the automatic promotion places once more with two games remaining.

There will be another huge travelling support to cheer the lads on, giving the players that added boost of energy on what is likely to be another hot and sunny afternoon. Get the sun tan lotion on, lubricate the throat with some Tequila and hopefully the lads will, once again, do us proud. SWA.
