Liverpool legend Fowler now favourite for Tranmere job

By

Another day, another front-runner emerges. According to Bet Victor, former Liverpool and England striker Robbie Fowler is now favourite to replace Micky Mellon at Tranmere.

The prospect appointing Fowler as manager will probably fill most Tranmere fans with dread. We’ve been down this route before with John Barnes.

According to Bet Victor, Fowler has edged ahead of Anthony Barry and is at 7/4 for the job, Barry now priced 5/2 with John McGreal at 4/1. This is slightly different to Sky Bet who still have Barry as favourite ahead of Fowler.

Fowler has been looking to move into management in the UK for some time and recently had a spell in charge of Brisbane Roar in the Australian A-League. In 22 games, he recorded 10 wins, seven losses and five draws.

Fowler also coached Thai club Muangthong United in 2011-12 and has done some work with MK Dons on the coaching side previously.

The 45-year-old has minimal experience in the Football League and you’d have to seriously question his knowledge of players and the competition. However, there is no denying it would be a decent move in terms of PR for Rovers and may even put a few extra fans on the gate next time we’re allowed in the ground. Not that it justifies his appointment.

Interestingly, Nigel Adkins is back in at 8/1 with Sky Bet having at one stage slipped to 25/1 on Thursday. He would be a name most fans would be pleased to see at Tranmere.

Many EFL clubs return to pre-season training this week, so you’d expect that Mark Palios will be keen to make an appointment in the coming days.
