Macclesfield Town returned to the top of the National League table tonight thanks to an 89th minute goal from former Tranmere loanee Nathan Blissett.
The Silkmen failed to breakdown a plucky Gateshead team for much of the game, but once again, Jon Askey’s side have come up with a late winning goal that probably spells the end of not only Tranmere’s title challenge, but also those of Aldershot and Wrexham.
The game finished 1-0, while elsewhere Dover lost 2-1 at Eastleigh.
It means Tranmere trail Macc by eight points, a huge gap with just seven games left to play. Sutton United now look like the only team that can realistically stop them from winning the league title and sealing a return to the Football League. Sutton have now slipped three points behind in second position.
