Crewe captain George Ray joins Tranmere

Tranmere Rovers have today made their first summer signing with the arrival of central defender George Ray from Crewe Alexandra.

The 25-year-old was skipper at Gresty Road after coming through the youth ranks with the club.

Ray went on to make more than 150 appearances for the Railwaymen, including 36 last season in League Two after becoming the first player to make his professional debut in a Wembley Cup Final when he came on as a substitute as Crewe beat Southend United 2-0 in the EFL Trophy in 2013.

Further experience was gained during a loan spell with Leek Town earlier in his career, while he has also represented Wales at Under-21 level.

Ray’s arrival on a two-year contract follows a number of last season’s squad signing new contracts with the club.

Manager Micky Mellon suggested that there will be further additions to his squad in the coming days.

Speaking to the official club website, he said: “We have been working very hard to find the right players.

“We will be hoping to strengthen the squad further over the next few days.”
