I don’t know what to be more excited about at the moment – the return of Friday night football, sitting proudly in the play off positions in the table or the chance to get revenge on Macclesfield for last season.
Playing under the lights strikes a chord with all football fans, with many citing the first night game as the moment they fell in love with their team. As Tranmere fans, we are particularly fortunate in this regard because of all the games we were able to play on a Friday night instead of Saturday afternoon. Remember that magic night when West Ham and Clive Allen were sent back to London with a 4-2 defeat, and the noise of the SWA ringing in their ears!!
To be in 7th position after over a quarter of the season is a testament to the foresight of the club in both this season’s recruitment policy, and also in creating a league ready squad while still in the National League. Two narrow defeats in the league are the only blots on our copybook for this season.
Friday will also give us a chance to get our own back on a team who gave us a bit of pain last year. The home defeat was one of the hardest things we had to cope with last season and was probably quite instrumental in their run for the title. However, revenge is a dish best served cold (and wet if the forecast is anything to go by) so a professional performance is the way to tackle the game, rather than a retribution fuelled battle.
But when it really comes down to it, I am still just excited about sitting in Prenton Park for a football league fixture. Everything else is secondary to that. I hope that my sons excitement about his first night game never goes away too and he can pass it on to his own children.
SWA.
