League Two: Oldham sack manager, Grimsby sign Swede and Preston to sign striker

By

If you’ve lost track of all the goings on in League Two due to the festivities this week, we’ve gathered the latest need-to-know information in one place.

So, settle back, open some more cheese, grab a selection box and get yourself up-to-date.

Oldham sack manager Frankie Bunn

When Oldham appointed former player Frankie Bunn (pictured above) in the summer, many expected to see the Latics struggle. However, they’ve been competing well and were in the top seven as recently as last week.

However, two defeats in a few days, compounded by the 6-0 thrashing at Carlisle on Boxing Day, has cost Bunn his job. The club wielded the axe yesterday apparently, and some reports suggested they let him know by email. Stay classy, Oldham.

Former Bolton boss Owen Coyle is the 2/1 favourite to be the next manager at Boundary Park, with Darren Ferguson, John Askey, Gary Bowyer and Kevin Nolan also featuring highly in the latest odds.

Preston set to sign Exeter hot-shot Stockley

Reports are suggesting that Championship club Preston will sign Exeter’s top scorer Jayden Stockley in January. The striker has attracted attention from a host of clubs, but it’s believed PNE are the first to trigger the player’s release clause.

In other Preston news, they will also sign Walsall’s Josh Ginnelly in January by the looks of it – remember him? A fee has reportedly been agreed between the two clubs.

Motherwell striker ready for League Two move

Meanwhile, Stockley could be replaced at Exeter by Motherwell striker Ryan Bowman. Motherwell have accepted a bid from an unnamed League Two club for the player, with Exeter thought to be lining him up as a direct replacement for Stockley.

Grimsby agree deal to sign Swedish full-back

Grimsby Town have agreed to sign 23-year-old left-back Sebastian Ring from Swedish outfit Orebro. He will join on a free transfer subject to medical and international clearance.

Mariners boss Michael Jolley knows the player from his own time in Sweden last season. He’s been described as an “attacking left-back”.

Macclesfield sign keeper

Macclesfield have signed goalkeeper Manny Idem, 20, on a deal until the end-of-the-season. Idem has been on the books of Aston Villa, among others, and joins Sol Campbell’s squad to add competition to first team goalkeepers.

Morecambe pay players

A rather strange statement of four lines appeared on the Morecambe website today explaining that the payment of salaries to staff had been authorised. There was apparently some sort of technical issue that prevented wages being paid earlier.

In more Morecambe news, midfielder Aaron Wildig will need a scan on his knee after being injured in their Boxing Day defeat at Tranmere.
