League Two transfer round-up – 30/5/18

By

Several clubs have got their summer squad building off to a flying start, with Oldham Athletic, Notts County and Mansfield Town among those already in the thick of the action.

We will start this round-up at Oldham where the Boundary Park outfit have today re-signed midfielder Jose Baxter. It looked like Baxter could be Tranmere-bound this summer after spending much of the last month or so around the club – he was even in Aldo’s celebrating Rovers’ promotion in to the early hours just a few weeks ago.

However, the former Everton man will look to get his career back on-track with the newly relegated Latics. If he can rediscover his previous form, he will be a brilliant signing. It’s a big ‘if’ though.

Notts County have some money to spend this summer and they’re making sure everyone knows about it. They have signed young Chester midfielder Tom Crawford for an undisclosed fee today and have also had at least one, possibly two, cash bids rejected for Chesterfield striker Kristian Dennis.

Dennis is in high-remand following the Spireites’ relegation out of the EFL, and new Chesterfield manager Martin Allen has confirmed the club has rejected bids from both Notts County and Port Vale. It’s believed they are holding out or a fee of at least £100,000 for the 28-year-old.

Lincoln City made an impressive start to their summer transfer activity with the capture of Boreham Wood’s play-off loser(!) Bruno Andrade. The Imps lost in the League Two play-off semi-finals to Exeter this season and will be looking to go be in the shake-up again next time around.

They will probably have to do that without influential midfielder Alex Woodyard who is believed to be close to a move to League One Peterborough United. The Posh need to meet a release clause in the midfielder’s contract which it looks like they will. Luton Town are also interested.

Veteran winger Jamal Campbell-Ryce will again be operating in League Two next season. The much-travelled 35-year-old was released by Carlisle United just a couple of weeks ago, but he has secured a one-year contract with Stevenage.

Also signing for Stevenage is defender Scott Cuthbert. He has penned a two-year deal with the club after leaving Luton Town whom he captained to promotion this season. It’s a bit of a coup for Stevenage, and the 30-year-old will likely take the captain’s armband.

Mansfield Town have signed defender Matt Preston on a free transfer after the player left Swindon Town. He had been offered a new contract by Swindon boss Phil Brown but opted instead for a switch to Field Mill.

Grimsby Town have signed Chesterfield defender Alex Whitmore for an undisclosed fee, although the fact he has only signed a one-year deal suggests that fee to be nominal at best.

It’s a busy time at Cheltenham Town after they pulled off a great bit of business by landing experienced Sheffield United defender Chris Hussey on a free. Hussey, 29, was allowed to leave Bramall Lane having ended last season on loan at Swindon.

Also heading to Cheltenham is experienced midfielder Ben Tozer, the 28-year-old turning down a new contract at Newport in order to move to Whaddon Road. Connor Thomas, Johnny Mullins, Ryan Broom and Alex Addai have also joined Cheltenham.

The Robins are set to lose captain Carl Winchester to Forest Green Rovers though, the midfielder expected to be confirmed no a two-year contract at The New Lawn tomorrow morning.

We all know Tranmere love to re-sign a former player, but Cambridge United have taken that to a new level this week by re-signing defender George Taft for the FOURTH time. The 24-year-old centre back played 29 games on loan for the club last season in what was his third spell but has now penned a permanent deal after leaving previously club Mansfield.

Colchester have kept it low-key with their two signings so far. Ex-Tranmere defender John McGreal, now manager at Colchester, has brought in young Brighton goalkeeper Bailey Vose and former Millwall defender Noah Chesmain.

Finally, Port Vale need a new striker and are being linked to a few in addition to their failed bids for Kristian Dennis, as mentioned above. Two more who are rumoured to interest the Valiants are Peterborough forwards Ricky Miller and Junior Morais, both transfer listed by Posh.

We will try to keep you on top of all the transfer dealings in League Two this summer on a weekly basis.

Don’t forget, the EFL transfer window will close ahead of the start of the new season, as per the Premier League.
