Macclesfield look to regain top spot

While Tranmere may not be in action tonight, there is a crucial game taking place that does effect Rovers with Macclesfield looking to return to the top of the table.

The Silkmen play their game in hand tonight with the opportunity to return to top spot ahead of Sutton, and in the process make it even more unlikely that Tranmere will end the season as Champions. They slipped to second place on Saturday due to them not playing and Sutton winning against Chester.

It left Sutton United top of the National League on goal difference from Macclesfield, with Tranmere sitting in third position five points behind both teams.

Victory for Macclesfield tonight will mean Rovers have an eight-point gap to overturn in the remaining seven games, a task that is surely going to be too much.

National League as it stands

The National League table as of 10am, 27th March, 2018

Macclesfield will be up against a Gateshead side that were beaten in the FA Trophy semi-final by Bromley at the weekend, and who have struggled for consistency all season. They currently sit 13th in the league with nothing left to play for, and with three red cards since the turn of the year, their disciplinary record also doesn’t fill you with any confidence that they can get a result tonight.

However, if they can secure an unlikely victory, it will give Tranmere hope going in to that crucial final run of games, starting with an incredibly tricky game at Dover on Good Friday.

A disastrous opening two months of the season left Tranmere with no room to manouvere in the title race, and you have to feel that recent defeats to both Macclesfield and Boreham Wood have ended title aspirations. That said, a result for Gateshead tonight and a good Easter weekend could leave things looking incredibly different by this time next week.
