Midfielder Potter and striker Payne added to Tranmere squad

Tranmere Rovers manager Micky Mellon has taken his weekly new signing tally up to seven by bringing in former Liverpool midfielder Darren Potter and ex-Bristol Rovers striker Stefan Payne.

The double deal adds to the signings of George Ray, Kieron Morris, Calum Woods, Sid Nelson and Corey Blackett-Taylor from earlier in the week.

Potter, 34, is a midfield player who began his professional career at Anfield before going on to play for Wolves, Sheffield Wednesday, MK Dons and, most recently, Rotherham United.

With almost 500 senior appearances under his belt, he will bring plenty of experience to the squad and adds to the midfield options at Micky Mellon’s disposal.

27-year-old striker Payne arrives at Prenton Park having been released by Bristol Rovers at the end of last season.

Described by Mellon as a “target man” in a piece on the club’s website, he began his career in non-league football before progressing up the pyramid where he has played as high as the Championship with Barnsley.

Both players will join the squad for a pre-season training camp in Scotland next week, culminating in a behind closed doors fixture against Livingston on 6 July.
