Here’s one we certainly didn’t see coming, but midfielder Alex Woodyard has joined League One minnows AFC Wimbledon on a free transfer.
Woodyard spent the final months of last season on loan at Tranmere and showed some signs of quality as Rovers began to close-in on the teams above them in the table, including Wimbledon.
Having left Peterborough United upon the expiration of his contract, we understood that Woodyard was nailed on to be at Prenton Park next season. However, he’s instead opted to join Wimbledon for another relegation scrap next season.
While it would have been nice to have the player on-board, this week’s signing of Jay Spearing more than makes up for it, with Rovers adding the former Premier League midfielder and in the process probably securing one of the strongest players in that position across the bottom two divisions.
The failure to secure Woodyard does perhaps now put extra importance on bringing in another central midfielder or two, or ideally, getting out-of-contract Ollie Banks secured for next season.
