Tranmere have been linked with a move for Plymouth Argyle defender Ryan Edwards in recent weeks, but who is he?
Well, what you may be surprised to hear is that he has actually played for Tranmere already, but we’ll come back to that shortly.
Edwards is a 25-year-old centre back from Liverpool. As a youngster, he joined Blackburn Rovers and captained their youth team to the FA Youth Cup final in 2011-12, subsequently signing his first professional contract in the months that followed.
He never quite made the first team at Ewood Park and instead enjoyed multiple loan moves in the Football League. Rochdale was arguably his most successful, but there were also stints at Fleetwood Town, Chesterfield and Tranmere.
If you’re struggling to remember him, that will be due to the fact he played only once; a forgettable 5-0 defeat at Peterborough (standard) in 2013. He returned to Blackburn injured shortly after, boss Ronnie Moore reluctant to throw young players in given how the team was performing.
Since then, Edwards has gone on to develop in to a solid defender. A loan move to Morecambe was made permanent in 2014 and he would make well over 100 league appearances for the Shrimpers before being snapped up by Plymouth in June 2017.
He was a firm favourite with the Home Park faithful during his time at Plymouth and also showed tremendous mental strength to overcome testicular cancer in 2018.
He has performed solidly and consistently for Argyle in his time there, but following their relegation from League One last season, he announced that he was rejecting their offer of a new contract and would leave the club.
Several clubs are rumoured to be interested, including Rovers. Blackpool and Bristol Rovers the other front-runners.
Central defender Steve McNulty has left Rovers this summer, with Mark Ellis also likely to miss the start of the season through injury. Although Tranmere have tied Manny Monthe to a new deal, you’d expect one more centre back to arrive at least – Edwards or Sid Nelson are surely the main contenders.
