It’s important to hit form at the right time and Tranmere Rovers are certainly in good form with five weeks of the season remaining.
Rovers have eight matches between now and May 4 with their fate in their own hands. Win all eight, and they will be promoted into League One.
It’s an exciting time to be a supporter of the Prenton Park outfit, with some huge games coming up in the next few weeks, starting with Saturday’s visit of Carlisle United.
The Cumbrians are also pushing for honours at the end of the season. Currently on the fringes of the play-offs, Steven Pressley’s men still harbour ambitions of a return to League One themselves, so it should make for an entertaining encounter at Prenton Park.
While Tranmere’s form is top notch, six wins in the last six and seven wins and a draw from the last eight outings, Carlisle’s has hit a little blip of late in the past couple of weeks.
Home defeat to bottom of the table strugglers Notts County was followed by a couple of draws against Forest Green Rovers and Cambridge United. Not bad results in isolation, but they would have hoped to have picked up a few more points to see them back in the thick of the play-off mix up.
Looking at the stats, Carlisle have the poorest defensive record in the top half of the League Two table, conceding 51 goals from their 39 matches played. So could this be an area in which Tranmere can exploit?
Well, with the leading goalscorer in the division in James Norwood, you’d think so. It’s an experienced backline with the likes of Danny Grainger and Anthony Gerrard, but with that comes ageing legs and Norwood will almost certainly test them by trying to run in behind as often as possible.
As I mentioned earlier in the piece, it is an exciting time to be a part of the Super White Army. The stakes are high and the atmosphere should be fantastic. Not yet got your ticket?
