Wembley nightmare as Rovers miss out

By

Tranmere’s dreams of a return to the Football League today turned to nightmares as a defensive horror show allowed Forest Green to run out 3-1 victors.

FGR had taken an early lead before a stunning hit from Connor Jennings put Rovers on terms. Tranmere looked like they’d go on to win, with Andy Mangan inches from converting on the end of a left wing cross and James Norwood seeing a one-on-one effort saved.

Chris Doidge put Forest Green back in front shortly before half-time, cutting inside of Steve McNulty with ease before converting past Scott Davies.  Minutes later, it was game over. Liam Ridehalgh gifting possession to Kaiyne Woolery who made no mistake to grab his second of the game.

Tranmere should got back in to it during the second half, Cole Stockton shooting over as the goal sat open following a mistake from the FGR keeper, but it wasn’t to be.

Questions about team selection can be left for another day. The SWA were outstanding and travelled in great numbers.

We’ll have to go through it all again next season. It doesn’t bear thinking about right now.
